If any of you aware, last holiday my other site My Interesting Files was down for more than a week due to error. I don’t remember how it was started, all I remember that I was panic, trying to solve the problem by myself with my limited knowledge, ended up totally a mess, and I had to restore the WordPress.

After the WordPress restored, all my previous posts was gone. Been searching for solution, found nothing. Been asking around who I think have knowledge about it but nobody can help. My last hope was my hosting company, DreamHost. Contacted them via live chat, been served by Shaun. We’ve been chatting for 3 hours, trying to resolved the problem. But still it didn’t bring back my previous posts. Can you imagine how I felt, thinking all my 3 years blogging was vanished just like that?

The last suggestion from Shaun was to submit ticket to the DreamHost, hoping one of the staff there can solve the problem. I did. And about 3 hours later I received an email saying my posts had been restored, thank’s to Justin. I was so happy about it. And following some small errors that I found later on, I email them again, and they helped me fix them again.

So my point is, that the DreamHost team had been patiently helped me sort all the problems, which I didn’t get it in my previous hosting company. (You can check out my past experienced with my previous hosting company from here and here). This makes me feel save, that I’m not alone, that there always be someone who will always there to help me sort my problems.

This post was not meant to be an advertisement. It’s my appreciation and my gratitude to DreamHost team. Thank you so much, you guys rock..!

So if you are not satisfied with your current hosting company, or find it hard to find someone to help you sort your website problem, come join me in DreamHost and prove it yourself. You can use my refferal link if you want.

I’m so glad that My Interesting Files problem is fixed already. Thank’s to Rahul from Devil Workshop who had been so patient helping me to fix it. He’s a very nice guy. Since my knowledge so limited, I gave him access to my cPanel, WordPress and Blogger account so he could check for the problem. And it took only about one hour or two until he managed to fix it. We did our conversation by IM. He’s friendly, polite and very humble. It was nice chatting with him.

According to Rahul, the transfer team from my hosting company transfered content via FTP, so old content was being served from normal URLs, and WordPress never queries for them. So he moved them into one folder under My Interesting Files directory, changed few settings at Blogger, changed slug of a post at WordPress, and renamed a file on my server. And after that, everything is fixed!

One lesson that I learn from this. Although they labeled themself as a Transfer Team, doesn’t mean they totally understand about transfer. Especially when it’s about transferring from Blogger to WordPress which I think it’s very common in this blogsphere. One of their answer that I think is so silly was “Please note since the posts you have imported are the old ones it is normal for it display the old contents”.

If you are planning to transfer your site, it’s advisable that you do it yourself. It gives you the opportunity to experience and enrich your knowledge. Go search for a guide. There are many websites that had posts about step by step of transferring your site. Leave a comment in their post if you have questions, I’m sure most of them will help you.

I also wish to thank Mig from Pamil Vision and Bobby from Revellian who have earnestly tried to help me with the process, making it less stressful for certain. A zillion thanks, guys.

But choosing the right hosting provider is not as easy as you think, especially when there are thousands of web hosting companies offer almost same hosting packages. I’ve been browsed around and found some warning about things you should be aware of before selecting a web hosting company that made me do even more research about choosing a web hosting. So the results that I got for choosing the right web hosting company are :

Do not fall for the cheap price they offer. The cheapest you’ll get, the more you should be aware of. Don’t pay cheap, cause you get what you pay and then face a lot of down time. You will lose credibility and thus lose your readers.

Choose a host with less downtime, cause you want the maximum exposure to your site and avoid it being unavailable to your readers.

Find a host which provide the 24/7 customer support, cause if you have problems technically at any time, you know that you will always have support from your web hosting service.

Choose a host that provide Fantastico, an auto-installation for software scripts like WordPress. With Fantastico, it only takes a few quick steps and your blog is installed.

You shouldn’t be charged for the set up fee. In fact, they should be happy to do it for you cause you had choose to do business with them.

Choose a host that offers FTP access which allows you to upload files to your site or updating your information. Cause you will need this when you have changes or addition to make.

It is very important to back up files and it’s good if you can find host that does this as well.

After reading some posts in Sueblimely, Gather Success, Blogging4Cash and some other more, I decided to have Hostgator as my hosting provider. This is my final decission since there are many bloggers recommended it, and has all the criteria that mentioned above as well.

With my knowledge about hosting that almost zero, their live support and their contact support by email had been very helpful for me until I could get this far. And so far, I haven’t experienced downtime, and hopefully never. And I choosed Baby Package, their favorite plan. This package allows me to host unlimited domains and with the disk space and bandwith provided, I could host more than one site. Who knows I want to start other site in the future?
