Wordpress Automatic Upgrade

Remember the time when you felt so frustating while upgrading your Wordpress? I felt that before, and I hate it. We had to go through all the hassles yet the errors. I even decided not to upgrade my Wordpress at all, just left it with what it was as long as there’s no problem with my sites. But now, since I was introduced by Rahul from Devils Workshop, upgrading Wordpress couldn’t be more easier. It took me only ten minutes to do the upgrade. Thank’s to Wordpress Automatic Upgrade Plugin.

There are several steps that you have to do during the upgrade process:

  1. Back up files. It’s recommended to back up your files and download them before moving to the next process. But you can skip this step if you don’t want to back up your files.
  2. Database back up. The database back up will be stored in a folder called wpau-backup in the root folder of your site. It’s recommended to back up your database and download them before moving to the next process. You can skip this step too if you don’t want to back up your database.
  3. You’ll be prompt to choose where to get the upgrade files. There are two choices, but the second one still not available yet. So just choose the first one which is ‘Choose get the latest version from Wordpress.org’ and press ‘Let’s Go’.
  4. This step is to put your site into the maintenance mode.
  5. This step is to de-activate all the plugins.
  6. Then the upgrading process will begin, start with upgrading all the installation files.
  7. Next step, they will upgrade the WP database.
  8. After finish with the upgrading process, they will put your site out of the maintenance mode and re-activate all the plugins. Some of the plugin might be failed to re-activate. So you have to re-activate them later manually.
  9. At this step, they will offer you again to download all the files and database backups. If you haven’t download them, this is your last chance. If you have, at this step they will offer you to clean up all the upgradation files.
  10. That’s it. Your WordPress will be upgraded already.

I had upgraded three of my sites using this plugin, and I found one error after upgrading this site. After finish with the upgrading process and re-activate the plugins, I found that my site still in the maintenance mode. I look for the solution in the site and I found it :

Only under some rare condition this will happen. To get your site back online, you need to do these steps :

  1. Login to your site using FTP
  2. Delete the index.php file
  3. Rename the index.php.wpau.bak file to index.php

Performing these steps should remove the maintenance mode message.

And it worked! After following the steps above, my site back to normal again. This is awesome. Like I said, this took me only about ten minutes to upgrade my WordPress to the latest version. I suggest you use this plugin if you have limited knowledge about programing or all those kind of stuffs, like me. It really helps, and the important part is to avoid the error or mistake you might make during the manual upgrading process.

Hmm… I always have been a little bit “afraid” to using the automatically upgrade plugin. I feel like I’m losing control about the whole upgrade process.

Every time there’s a new wp version, I followed the next steps:
1. backing up ALL the files on my ftp
2. backing up my database
3. putting the site in the maintenance mode
4. de-activating plugings
5. deleting the old wp files
6. uploading the new wp files
7. run the upgrade file
8. see if everything is working
9. de-activating the maintenance mode

Soo.. you see it takes a lot of time. But if you say that you’ve used this plugin for 3 sites and you didn’t had any troubels with it I’m willing to give it a try! ;)

Thnx a lot Dunn!

The steps that you stated above, it’s the same with what the plugin does. It’s just, by using the plugin, all of those done by the plugin, not by us.
